28. Sep 2007 - Vacuum insulation: buildings wanted for monitoring tests

Abstract
Following the first field tests with vacuum insulation on individual building elements, several demonstration buildings were built to gain detailed experience using this new thermal insulation technology. It is now planned to assess more conventional buildings within the scope of the VIP-PROVE research project in order to document the suitability and success of vacuum insulation based on reference examples. Buildings are sought which are already fitted with vacuum insulation or in which it is planned to use such insulation.

Detailed description
Modern vacuum insulation technology offers good prospects to the construction industry. Efficient and effective thermal insulation based on vacuum technology is an attractive proposition, however there is some degree of mistrust: will vacuum panels remain undamaged in the rough environment of building sites, will the vacuum hold for several decades, has the technology fully matured and what additional costs can be expected?
The VIP-PROVE research programme includes a three-year monitoring programme, which should use scientific methods to demonstrate the quality of the thermal insulation properties and the practicality of this new technology. The ZAE Bayern Institute has been authorised to carry out this programme and is now looking for suitable buildings, both in the new-build and refurbishment sectors. Suitable buildings are those in which it is planned to use vacuum insulation or those already fitted with such insulation.
