17. Jan 2009 - Award for ZAE Bayern as a “Landmark in the Land of Ideas”

Abstract
The Bavarian Center for Applied Energy Research (ZAE Bayern) was granted an award today for its innovative achievements in the area of high-performance glazing. As an active participant in the EnOB research initiative, ZAE Bayern is now one of the prize-winners in the Germany-wide “365 Landmarks in the Land of Ideas” innovation contest.
more details
After the award ceremony, an open day was held where visitors could find out more about the research and development work carried out at ZAE Bayern. Scientists presented interesting experiments in their labs and demonstrated exciting effects: for example, they created tasty ice cream using ultra-cold liquefied gas and made portrait pictures that visitors could take home by using a thermographic camera. Visitors were also offered fascinating insights into the nanosphere – the world of millionth-parts of a millimetre – via an electron microscope.
ZAE Bayern was founded in December 1991 and is based in Würzburg. Its main research topics include the development of energy-saving technology and designs and the exploitation of regenerative energy sources. Currently, around 170 employees are carrying out R&D work at ZAE Bayern’s three facilities in Würzburg, Erlangen and Garching. Research activities in Würzburg concentrate on the development and optimisation of materials and high-efficiency systems with tailored thermal properties. A main goal of this work is the reduction of heat losses from buildings through windows and walls, for example. A key role is played by the development of materials with microstructures, nanostructures and with extremely good thermal insulation properties. At the moment, for example, thin vacuum glazing is being developed at the institute, which will be able to compete with the best thermally insulating triple glazing solutions on the market in terms of insulation behaviour. At the same time, work on compact facade systems with good insulation properties is also continuing.
