Workshop on "improved learning in energy efficient schools"

Abstract
Date: 6-7 October 2010
Location: Jülich-Barmen
The learning and living environment provided by schools should offer optimum learning conditions. Investments in the learning environment and energy efficiency will directly benefit our children's future. The Fraunhofer Institute for Building Physics (IBP) is therefore organising a workshop on this theme called “Improved learning in energy efficient schools”. It will be held at the Science College Overbach, a training centre with a new building built to the “3-litre house” standard and with several innovative building details. Various exemplary new-build and refurbishment projects for schools will be presented, whereby the focus will be on the various possible ventilation strategies available for school buildings.
More details
The event is aimed at architects and designers, construction and building technology companies as well as at education providers and public administration. It intends to demonstrate how energy efficiency and optimum teaching conditions can both be implemented when building and renovating schools.
Programme
Detailed presentations will be given on the Science College Overbach, the Hohen Neuendorf Energy-plus School and the refurbishment of the Max Steenbeck Secondary School in Cottbus. Architects, design engineers, school heads, real estate management and the scientific support research will showcase exemplary school projects from different points of view and share their extensive project experience. The focus will then turn to ventilation and indoor air quality. Here, various ventilation strategies and the results of a field test will be presented. In addition, an overview will be provided of further ambitious school projects, the preliminary results from the accompanying social-scientific research for the various school projects will be explained and the possibilities for applying private-public partnership models will be outlined.
Conference venue
The event will be held at the Science College in the Overbach training centre, a new school building that has been recently completed to the “3-litre house” standard.
