Technology status: Phase 5

Switchable architectural glazing with electrochromic layers

This research project is designed to optimise the production of electrochromic glazing. The intention is to reduce the energy input by around 70 per cent and to lower costs by increasing the automation. It is also planned to improve the optical properties by increasing the optical modulation to 10 per cent transmission in the darkened state and 60 per cent in the lightened state.

Next Step: Vacuum insulation glass

Vacuum instead of inert gases - with this technological development, glazing could take another great developmental stride. However, at 10 tonnes per square metre, the atmospheric pressure on evacuated flat glazing is immense. And for evacuated glazing, the same applies as for vacuum panels: only a lasting vacuum guarantees good thermal insulation. Now, this research project is to provide evidence that evacuated glazings with special functional layers are technically feasible for architecture.
