EnerCalC – Simplified energy balancing to DIN V 18599

The energy balancing of buildings according to DIN V 18599 has been frequently criticised because of its complexity and time-consuming application. Calls to simplify the process came soon after the pre-standard series was first published. As part of a research project, the Excel-based EnerCalC tool has now been developed that is particularly suited for characterising buildings in terms of their energy use during the preliminary design phases.

Refurbishment of a Gründerzeit house with interesting details

In Hamburg, a Gründerzeit house that comprises two structurally identical building sections was fully refurbished. The refurbishment was carried out using two sets of standards to enable the two refurbishment alternatives to be compared in respect of energy efficiency and costs. Particular attention was paid to developing transferable solutions for the refurbishment of Gründerzeit houses.

Waste disposal given a new facelift

Built in 1968, the building was beginning to look very shabby and the facades and roofs were in urgent need of refurbishment since, as part of administrative reforms, it was intended to change the use of the building. Following completion of the rebuilding works on a very tight budget in 2006, the refurbished building now houses the vehicles for the city’s waste disposal services on the lower two floors and the administration in the upper two stories.

After the extensive refurbishment of the two building parts, constructed in 1977, the consumption level of a low-energy house is aimed at. The 2nd construction stage of the "Neue Burse", which was completed in 2003, currently is the biggest dwelling, which was constructed in passive-house standard.
